Description
Mantwa Mokoena leads the growing Majakathatha Cooperative of waste pickers at the Boitshepi landfill in South Africa. The cooperative is pushing for government to regulate the price of recyclables so waste pickers receive fairer payment for the glass, metal, plastic, and paper they remove from the landfill. They are also asking their local municipality to implement a programme in which households and businesses separate recyclables from waste before pick-up so that waste pickers can get off the landfill and run a recycling facility. By working long days, Mantwa was able to earn enough to help her son get through university. FULLY RELEASED - CONSENT NUMBER: JHB012
