Description
Informal workers gather for the meeting of their association, the Makola Market Traders Union, led by Juliana Brown Afari in Makola Market. With more than 2,000 members, the Makola Market Traders Union has established its strength in its numbers. By and large, the union is dominated by women, as seen here. The women traders deal in a variety products, including cloth, smoked fish, provisions, and household items. Together, the Union and its members aim to foster unity among its members. Through weekly meetings, such as the one shown here, the union and its members discuss the problems facing all traders. At the core of the union's activities are negotiations with local and national government to improve the status of the markets.
