Juliana Brown Afari leads a meeting of the Makola Market Traders Union at Makola Market. With more than 2,000 members, the Makola Market Traders Union has built its strength in its numbers. By and large, the union is dominated by women, as seen here. The women traders deal in a variety products, including cloth, smoked fish, provisions, and household items. Together, the Union and its members aim to foster unity and a shared platform for achieving their needs and aims for improved market conditions and secure livelihoods. Through weekly meetings, such as the one shown here, the union and its members discuss problems facing all traders. At the core of the union's activities are negotiations with local and national government to improve the status of the markets.
